Dear participants in the 13th edition of the Masterclass of Byzantine Chant from Iași,

Dear participants in the 13th edition of the Masterclass of Byzantine Chant,

„Indeed, psaltic music is not only prayer but also art,
but in order to understand it as art, in the proper spirit,
you must seek prayer first.”
(Panagiotis Neochotiris)

The Masterclass of Byzantine Chant in Iasi will bring to the attention of its attendees a topical approach to the musical phenomenon, in the light of the latest discoveries of neurosciences that stand as a contemporary testimony for the high wisdom of philokalic reflections.

The brand name of the Masterclass of Byzantine Chant in Iași was largely formed thanks to the direct and tireless involvement of the researcher and associate professor Maria Alexandru, PhD (“Aristotelis” University of Thessaloniki).

The special guest who honors us for the fourth time with his presence in the greatest event dedicated exclusively to Psaltic Art in Romania is Master Panagiotis Neochoritis, Archon Protopsaltis of the Great Church of Christ (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople).

This year, the organisers have prepared a special programme to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the largest Byzantine music event in the country. Mr Panagiotis Neochoritis, the Archon Protopsaltis of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and his team of musicians, Assoc. Prof. Maria Alexandru and the Paleography Team of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as other surprise guests, are the highlights of the programme. The 10th Anniversary Edition is dedicated to the personality that founded the Masterclass project in Iasi, Lykourgos Angelopoulos († 2014) – the Maestro, Master and Man.

‘Byzantion’ choir gave concerts in Estonia On the 1st and 2nd of Februry 2017, members of the ‘Byzantion’ Choir gave two concerts of Psaltic music in Estonia (Tallinn and Pärnu) titled ‘Voices of the Byzantine Empire’, upon the invitation of the ‘Eesti Kontsert’ foundation. Whereas the previous editions brought on the great stages of Estonia choirs from Georgia, Egypt, Greece or Armenia, this year it was Romania’s turn to showcase its matchless treasure of Psaltic Art.

We have started registration for the 9th edition, 4-8 July 2016

This year, the organisers of the Masterclass of Byzantine Chant have prepared a special edition, which tackles the papadic genre from a practical, theoretical and historical perspective. Through this topic, we conclude the cycle of the three years in which we have presented the Byzantine compositional genres, maximizing now the deep understanding of interpretative acts through the prism of the ”master-disciple” relation.
